November 8, 2008

public.asu.edu

Hi, there!

I was laughing a lot while trying to speak some tong twisters from this site here. It’s so funny and useful to feel (and listen to) ourselves getting better in speaking English! Ok! Just have fun!!!!!

Try this tong twister below:

“Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?”

And this one?

“The thirty-three thieves thought that they thrilled the throne throughout Thursday.”

Is it hard? Ahahahahahahahahah…

You’ll find much more here. Enjoy!!!!

Funny computer problem story:

I was having trouble with my computer.  So I called Richard, the 11
year old next door whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked
him to come over.

Richard clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

As he was walking away, I called after him, ‘So, what was wrong?  He
replied, ‘It was an ID ten T error.’
I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, ‘An, ID ten
T error?  What’s that?  In case I need to fix it again.’

Richard grinned. ‘Haven’t you ever heard of an  ID ten T error before?’

‘No,’ I replied.

‘Write it down,’ he said, ‘and I think you’ll figure it out.’

So I wrote down:       I D 1 0 T

I used to like the little shit.

Two factory workers are talking.
The woman says, “I can make the boss give me the day off.”
The man replies, “And how would you do that?”
The woman says, “Just wait and see.” She then hangs upside-down from the ceiling.
The boss comes in and says, “What are you doing?”
The woman replies, “I’m a light bulb.”
The boss then says, “You’ve been working so much that you’ve gone crazy. I think you need to take the day off.”
The man starts to follow her and the boss says, “Where are you going?”
The man says, “I’m going home, too. I can’t work in the dark.”

British English X American English

September 17, 2008

Pardon me – This is very amusing for Brits in America. Most kids are taught to say "pardon me" if they fart in public or at the table etc. In America it has other meanings which take us Brits a while to figure out. I thought I was surrounded by people with flatulence problems!

Hi there!

Since I started being interested in studying English I was always involved with American English and I had not realized how much British and American English are different. Yes, they are. It must be similar the difference between Brazilian Portuguese and that language which is spoken in Portugal as well. The Very Best of English – The American’s Guide to Speaking British has a lot of words, expressions and slangs used in UK which have different meanings in USA. It’s a fun list of them that can be really useful some day. Enjoy!!

Do you know what the meaning of southpaw is? A person who is southpaw is a left-handed person. So my father is a southpaw person. This is an American slang used in sports according to the helpful explanation below:

“There’s a very good chance that as you view this lesson, the computer mouse is in your right hand. In fact, 87% of the world is right handed. But 11% of people are southpaws.
Southpaw is a sports term for a left-handed person. No one’s really sure where the term comes from, but it might have something to do with the fact that most baseball fields face east, so a southpaw is more likely to hit the ball south, to left field.
Southpaw pitchers and hitters are dangerous in baseball, but southpaw boxers are even scarier. Since most boxers train against a right-handed person, when they fight southpaws there are a lot of surprises.
But Olympic gold medalist and world famous boxer Oscar de la Hoya says he can handle southpaws. That’s why his next fight might be against Winky Wright, who is left-handed.”

You may learn much more about American slang and a lot of others idioms, or about American real life at English Baby. English Baby is a website for English learner from all countries around the world in which you learn English at the same time you can meet lots of people as well. Learning English and also have fun!!!!
